Battlefield 3 - Backend Problems
Oct 27 2011 01:37:49

DICE / EA have made us aware they are experiencing problems their systems which control BF3 including battlelog etc. This is causing servers to not display, players to be kicked amongst other things.

We hope EA will fix this soon, so we can all get back to the battlefield.

!! Not that old chestnut !!

Battlefield 3 - Server Update
Oct 27 2011 01:41:55

DICE have just released a server update which addresses:

    Crashes
Player slot issues with map rotation
    PB issues
    Invalid Player kick problems

We will be testing this update and will roll it out if we're happy it doesn't cause any significant issues.
In the mean time we've rolled out a PB update to all servers which should reduce player kicks for missing files. In order to pickup this change, first stop your server and then start it (don't use the restart option as this may not install this update correctly).

!! Our Server Has Been Done !!

EDIT

BF3: Known issues with R7
Nov 02 2011 13:25:54

We are aware of several issues with the latest release of the BF3 server, these include thus far:

- Bans not working (throws back InvalidBanCategory)
- The server queuing addon has been disabled due to instability. Any servers with this enabled may not be accessible until they are restarted.

The above issues have been reported directly to the development team at DICE and will hopefully be fixed in the next release.

:icon_eek: These are a bit worring in my book cant ban players hmmm NOT GOOD !!. sort it out Dice  :icon_redface:

Battlelog Update #2

By: ogabrielson Posted: 2 days ago 1736 comments
Since the day of launching Battlelog we have been working hard on adding new features and fixing issues. Today we’ve rolled out many of those fixes on Battlelog. The list below shows the biggest changes that we think you guys will appreciate.
The update that took place this morning contained over 100 fixes(!). This number is of course impressive but what’s more exciting is that a vast majority of these new features are based on your feedback on our Get Satisfaction forum. Thanks to you being so active there we can pinpoint what requests are in demand even faster. Next to each change in the list there’s a link to the corresponding feedback thread.

We monitor the Get Satisfaction forums on a daily basis and try to get a picture of what you guys want implemented or fixed. Worth mentioning is that community moderators, support and DICE developers are participating. So if you have feedback or just want to vote for ideas (use the star icon), use the yellow tab on the left side of the page. Thanks for taking the time submitting feedback. As always, we are listening!

Change list

More Server Browser filters
Even more filters have been added to the browser. How about filtering on game size, map rotation and password protection? Free slot searching has also been improved with added options. Requested by Power2ouse among others in this thread.
“Remember me” feature for sign in
When logging in you now have the option to remember your credentials. This allows you to sign right in next time you visit Battlelog, even if you close your browser. Requested by dannyboi among others Get Satisfaction.
Fixed server pinging problems in Internet Explorer 8/9 under “Protected mode”
Due to browser settings in Internet Explorer, server pings did not appear in the Server Browser and has now been fixed. This only affected Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox work as intended. Requested by FixWithFirepower among others. More info in these 2 threads on Get Satisfaction.
Play button next to server name for faster joining
When hovering a server in the Server Browser list, a play button will appear to the left. Clicking it will get you right into the action, even faster than before. Requested by dibley1973 among others in this thread.
Punkbuster check before game launch
Prior to launching the game, Battlelog will now check if Punkbuster has been correctly installed. This should fix the “Kicked by administrator” message some of you got after playing a few minutes. Get Satisfaction.
Refresh buttons for “Favourites” and “History” lists in Server Browser
The listing of your previous or favourite servers now features a refresh button in the top left. This will make refreshing your list of servers much easier! Requested by Rave-UK among others in this thread.
Server Browser now remembers sort order
Searching for servers now automatically remembers your sorting order in the server browser. Requested by NyanPrime among others in this thread.
Reminder about Battlelog's URL when signing in from Origin
Visiting Battlelog from Origin is a handy way of getting started as it will sign you right in. But you can also visit Battlelog from any computer and sign in like you would on any other page. Bookmarking your favorite pages can be very helpful!

Battlefield 3 - Server Browser Fixes
Nov 07 2011 10:56:18

DICE have given word that as of ~30mins ago there has been fixes to the server browser which should result in more servers getting a fair shot at being in the list of servers shown for any given criteria.

In essence the list is now larger, 300 servers, and is randomised.

DICE, the studio behind the recent Battlefield 3 first person shooter, has confirmed that a patch for the game will be released this week on the PC, while consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 will receive their own update after that.

Battlefield 3 was released at the end of October and went on to experience some impressive sales, with more than 5 million copies reaching the hands of fans from all around the world.

Still, things aren't perfect with the game, so DICE is working hard on a new patch for the shooter that should bring lots of improvements while removing issues that really disrupted the experience of players with the title, like the previously detailed tactical lights.

More details have now been shared by DICE ahead of the patch's release for the PC, so check them out below.

"The DICE team is hard at work supporting Battlefield 3," the studio said. "To date, we have implemented several server updates to improve stability and performance. [This week] we are publishing a significant Battlefield 3 client update for the PC. Console patches take a bit longer due to the certification requirements for console content, but it will follow shortly after the PC update."

While a concrete changelog will appear soon enough, the studio mentioned some general areas that have been improved, including the likes of "improved polish, stability, weapons balancing, squad control functionality, user interface enhancements, and several feature enhancements that address feedback the community has provided to date – plus we’re removing the so called “negative mouse acceleration” that some of you have experienced."

For those who abuse the game by either cheating or using exploits, DICE says that it's analyzing data all the time and those who've been found to trick the system will be punished with things like bans or have their stats wiped.

Expect more details about this Battlefield 3 patch, for the PC as well as for consoles, later this week before its release

-- A detailed look at Squad refinements

A detailed look at Squad refinements

Today's PC client patch features numerous tweaks to Squad functionality and is part of our ongoing efforts to make it easier to play with friends and Platoon mates. These changes will also be implemented for consoles when we release the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 updates shortly. Stay tuned for the exact date of the console updates.

First, we need to look at how joining with Squads and Platoons affects the balance of teams. Initially, servers are commanded to equal out each side, so joining with friends can impact that balance while joining with Platoons further hinders this. As a result we have made some adjustments to the in-game Squad management screen.

For PC, you are now able to highlight the various Squads and select which one you wish to join by selecting a Squad and then clicking the Join Squad button. Please note that the Squad Privacy option still allows 2 man Squads which, during 64 player sessions, can lead to players with no squad position –- the number of people with no Squads will be shown at the bottom of the Squad selection list.

After the patch is applied to consoles (in the near future) you will be able to join Squads by cycling through the list and selecting which Squad you wish to join.

Battlefield 3 - R9 Introduces New Issues
Nov 22 2011 17:59:30

It has come to our attention that the most recent server build (R9) for Battlefield 3 has introduced a slough of new problems. On the list:

Servers have been dropping with the same apparent crash (and new ones) more frequently.
Servers have been dropped from Battlelog within 5 minutes of going online.
Unranked servers are not properly functioning.
PunkBuster updates appear to be unrelated and we have updated manually just in case.

Thankfully the rubberbanding does not appear to be present, but all of these issues you're seeing are 100% code-based and happening for all RSPs of Battlefield 3. We are continuing to forward crash logs to DICE and hope they will alleviate these problems quickly but are unfortunately unable to give an ETA on any fixes at this time.

We thank you for your continued patience as we work with DICE to get everyone a better BF3 experience and apologize for any inconveniences these may cause. Please note that support does unfortunately not wield any magic fix-it buttons (we wish we did!) and all we can do is advise you to restart in the cases of crashing and servers dropping off. These are DICE issues happening worldwide regardless of machine or provider.

This is straight from BF3 Blog
Upcoming Battlefield 3 details hinted by DICE

BF3 patch
Just days ago, DICE released a huge Battlefield 3 PC patch weighing in at 450MB, fixing a whole slew of issues (you can find a fill list of release notes here). However, some of the promised fixes didn’t make it into the patch.

For instance, the tactical flashlights did not get fixed as previously promised, and neither did the change/nerf to the IRNV infrared sight. But fear not, those changes will be made in the upcoming patch DICE is currently working on.

Here’s a list of confirmed items/changes that will be addressed in an upcoming Battlefield 3 patch, as posted on Battlelog:

    In-game VOIP addition
    Tactical light nerf
    Chat window changes (size, positioning)
New squad changes (ability to make squads)

These are just some of the issues that are being worked on, and, according to DICE, they are well aware of the huge demand for Battlerecorder in Battlefield 3.

Quote
The latest release (R9) of the BF3 PC game server introduced, among other things, an unranked mode.

At the same time DICE locked down some settings for servers running in ranked mode.
The most prominent ones were:
- PunkBuster is forced active on a ranked server
- Game password is forced off on a ranked server
- Pre-Round player count is forced 4 or higher on a ranked server (default is 8, but can be lowered to 4)
- idle-kick is forced on on a ranked server

Most servers out there run in ranked mode, and there has been a fair bit of negative sentiment regarding the ranked server lock-down.
It seems to be centered around these three things:
- 4 players on a server needed to get out of pre-round
- When in pre-round, players cannot move
- Idle timeout will kick anyone who doesn't touch the mouse/keyboard within 5 minutes

These three in combination are perceived as too restrictive by people. Particularly smaller communities complain that it is much more difficult to populate their servers than it used to be.

Most communities that do not have a large number of members get a good game started on their server by "seeding"; that is, having players hang out on the server - sometimes being idle/away - with the intent of attracting other players. This works because other players are more likely to join a server with players on it than an empty server. Before R9, the server could be set to start the round with just 1 player, so the seeding players could move around on the server and play the game. With R9, the seeders can no longer move. A single person could also seed a server previously. With R9 it is ineffective; other players will learn to avoid servers with <4 players on them as they will also have to wait in pre-round.

Adding the the 5-minute idle kick means that having less than four people seed is not effective, as they will get kicked out of pre-round with regular intervals.

Seeding is positive from a community perspective. More people playing on the community's server equals a happy community. Seeding with idle players is however negative from a pubbing player's perspective. It means that there are servers with players on them, some of which are idle for a long time. To put it bluntly, players that are seeding while idle are false advertising for the server. Seeding is still done because it is one of the few means which communities have to attract players to their servers. There are more people who want to run BF3 servers than is justified by the player base. Therefore, communities use any methods at their disposal to affect other players' to choose to play on their servers.

DICE is not particularly fond of seeding-when-idling as a method of attracting players to servers. This is the main reason why the idle-kick was forced on.
DICE is not particularly fond of stats padding either. This is the main reason why the game password is forced off, and the pre-round requires 4 players.

However, the combination of all the restrictions at once is too restrictive. We will not lift the pre-round min player count restriction, but we will allow ranked servers to disable idle-kick in Server R10. There is certainly more that can be done to improve the game in this area, but I prefer not to make any promises which I cannot personally hold.

So there. I mentioned Server R10. It will be a small update. We'll post about it here once it is available.

Hi all,

We will release an update to the PC version of BF3 on Dec 6th -- that is, Tuesday morning around 8AM GMT next week. This coincides with an upgrade of many of our central systems which will be down for some hours starting around that time.

It will be both a client update -- approximately 2GB in size -- and a server update.  (so get on before to download it in time for clan games)

The client/server combination will be incompatible with older clients/servers. All players will be prompted to download the update once it has been released. All RSP companies will begin upgrading their servers at the same time.

The client update is large because it contains most of the content for Back to Karkand. This is not ideal, so we aim to make potential DLC content in the future as optional downloads.

Bugfixes:
Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point

Also, it will once again be possible to reduce the number of players required to start a round to 1 both in ranked and unranked mode. We changed it back after getting a lot of negative feedback from both individuals and the RSP companies.

Our plan is to introduce a warm-up mode, where players can move about and play the game, but with scoring disabled; then, when the number of players goes above the threshold -- that's when the real round starts.
